STUDY CITES MOST SLEEP-DEPRIVED CITIES IN AMERICA
Mattress Retailer Finds Possible Link between Unemployment and Sleeplessness
Hicksville, N.Y., October 24, 2011 – As we prepare to turn back the clocks in early November, a new ranking conducted for Sleepy’s, the mattress professionals, reveals which U.S. cities are most in need of those extra z’s. The Most Sleep-Deprived Cities list is based on an independent analysis of individual sleep habits as reported in an annual study of more than 350,000 adults by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The data reveals the following ten cities as America’s most sleep-deprived:
- Detroit, MI
- Birmingham, AL
- Oklahoma City, OK
- New Orleans, LA
- New York, NY
- Cincinnati, OH
- Louisville, KY
- Raleigh, NC
- Columbus, OH
- Boston, MA
Although many of the most sleep-deprived cities are located east of the Mississippi in areas hard hit by the recession and several of the top ten correlate with the American Fitness Institute’s Least Healthiest Cities in America, the top five metro areas may each have their own unique contributing factors:
- Detroit, the number one city in need of a good night’s slumber, is a poster child for urban problems, ranking 2nd in the annual list of America’s most dangerous cities
- Birmingham, AL is, according to the American Fitness Institute, among the “least healthy cities” in America
- Oklahoma City is seeing an alarming rise in prescription drug abuse
- New Orleans has endured a slow rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina six years ago compounded by the city’s high adult illiteracy rate
- New York which apparently lives up to its reputation as the city that never sleeps, has plenty to stress about these days, Occupy Wall Street, notwithstanding, it has the highest cost of living in the United States
California is Home To Most Well-Rested Cities
The study also reveals the cities reporting the most sleep, with the majority located in California. Although California has been among the states hardest hit by the housing crisis, apparently good weather helps them weather! The most well-rested reside in San Diego; Dallas; Richmond, Va.; San Jose, and San Francisco.
Dr. Michael Breus, the Sleep Doctor says, “Residents of the most sleep-deprived cities will get a free ‘gift’ November 6, when we turn the clocks back marking the end of daylight saving time. No matter where you live, let that be the starting point for a great night’s sleep every night.”
About the study
The data in this study was compiled with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s annual Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS) using telephone surveys to collect information on health behaviors in all 50 states. More than 350,000 adults are interviewed each year. The data was compiled using two variables: 1) average percentage of time that respondents reported having inadequate sleep or rest; and 2) average percentage of respondents that reported inadequate sleep more than half the time.
