Coil Count

Referring to an Innerspring Mattress, the coil count is the total number of Coils in the mattress.

 

Although it has been said that if there are more coils in a mattress then it is more supportive, today the coil count is not as important.  They way the coils are made now is the most important factor when it comes to determining the amount of comfort and support of the mattress.  Here are some helpful guidelines for coil count:

 

• The average innerspring mattress can have anywhere from 250 to 1,000 coil springs
• Mattresses with a coil count on the lower side suggests that a thicker wire has been used to counteract the lower coil count (see Coil Construction below)
• A solid reference point of the minimum coil count to look for is 300 in a full sized mattress, 375 for a queen and 450 for a king.
